The only legally valid marriage is a civil marriage. In Islam, religious marriage is required for marriage. Religious marriage after the official marriage does not constitute a problem in terms of Turkish legal rules, but the religious marriage without the official marriage will have no legal meaning and the parties will not be able to resort to any legal action based on this.
In order to prevent religious marriage without a civil marriage, a prison sentence of 2 to 6 months is regulated in our Turkish Penal Code for religious officials who perform the religious ceremony of marriage without official marriage.
